Independence
Visitor Center

National Park Service

The Independence Visitor Center is located in Independence National Historical Park, home to Liberty Bell and Independence Hall (a World Heritage Site).

The Independence Visitor Center hired Cloud Gehshan to conceptualize ways to better the visitor experience, including an enhanced signage and wayfinding system for the facility. Our team examined the complete journey of a visitor, from approaching the building, walking in the door through finalizing a transaction and leaving. At the end of this in-depth discovery process, Cloud Gehshan delivered a full master plan with brand, signage, and wayfinding recommendations for interior and exterior placement.

Identity
The original identity was hard to read and did not have a presence. We redesigned the identity to be bold and clean which is highly visible and legible from a distance.

Exterior Building Identification
To help visitors identify the building and entrances we used the new identity which is highly visible. We added new locations where this identity can be placed on the building's exterior to clearly mark entrances which were hidden before.

Banners
Adding banners around the building help to identify the visitor center and it's hard to find entrances. Color and engaging photos help draw attention to Philadelphia attractions.

Interior Signage
Perpendicular projection mounted wayfinding and identification signage helps the visitor navigate around the facility.

Portals
By adding the portal frames around the entrance to key spaces helps the visitor understand and navigate to key points of interest around the facility.

Information desks
Originally tucked under the alcoves. The design team recommended curving the desks and adding overhead identification signs that can be seen from both the north and south entrance. Above the desks is a sculptural digital screen that will intrigue and pull people to the desk area while also providing information about the park and sites.

Interpretive Graphics
We added interpretive graphics around the facility to tell the history of Philadelphia and what landmarks you can visit. We also have interpretive graphics for primary museums and venues that people might be interested in visiting.

Walking Map
While visitors are planning which sites they would like to see, we create a walking map of the area that shows key destinations around the visitor center. The map details radius circles which provide the view with an average walking distance in minutes from their exact location.
